Light source like Xenon flash lamp can have pulse to pulse fluctuation up to 10%. In addition, the pulse energy also changes gradually over time due to temperature and internal environment change. Tungsten Halogen lamp also suffer in gradual change of intensity due to temperature and internal structure change. Therefore, the reference signal has to be measured very frequently in order to maintain the measurement accuracy. This is cumbersome to the operator, and it can only reduce the mismatch, not eliminate it completely.
With Dual-Beam spectrometer, similar in concept with dual-beam spectrophotometer, reference is taken from the light split from the measured signal in real time. That makes the measurement independent of the light source fluctuation.
